Here is the deal. I signed up for OW with one dive shop. Attended class on Tuesday. I was not impressed with the instructor. He seems to know his stuff, but his delivery is just not very good. I still didn't have my gear at this time. So I went to another dive shop in town to try out some gear(they have a pool on site) While I am trying out gear the dive shop is trying to get me to take classes there. They didn't say anything negative about the other shop. Just stated that I would have more fun and learn more with them. I decided to listen in on a class they had going on. The instructor was way better at getting the information across. After chatting with the guys and gals at the shop for about 3 hours they offered to let me take the class with there shop for FREE! So I have taken them up on it. I also purchased all of my gear from them.

Here is what I need advise on. I am going to call the first dive shop and explain that I will not be in there class this weekend. Should I ask for a portion or all of my money back? feel I should get some money back because I really wasn't enjoying the class and was not satisfied. Any thoughts appreciated.

If you were dissatisfied enough to quit the class and go elsewhere, I'd ask for the refund for everything except the classroom materials which I assume you kept. I would also let the shop know your reasons for moving on, it's only fair that they have the opportunity to correct the issue. Is the instructor one of the owners or a hired/contract instructor?

it is a hired/contracted instructor.

Then I would be tactful in your explanation so as not to cause him to lose his job. You should probably talk to him first. It's only fair.

Yes, Very good point. I don't think he should be fired, just needs to work on his instructing a bit. I guess the only way for him to do that is to teach. I just don't want to be in his begining classes.

I have been a corporate trainer for 10+ years (accounting and software related courses - not SCUBA), and have taught thousands of people in all kinds of settings. I am sure that some days my delivery was almost unlistenable (especially after a bad flight or too many cocktails...or both the night before) and I know some days I "owned" the room. Don't feel bad about letting the instructor know tactfully that it wasn't working for you, and even offering specifics about why. I always appreciated feedback of any kind. If the LDS will not give you a partial refund at least in the form of store credit/discounts, then they do not deserve (or apparently want) your business, and you have learned a fairly cheap lesson about them...it could have been worse.

Best of luck in class and welcome to your new adventures (marriage and diving).

Thanks Puck. I have not been able to talk to the LDS owner yet. I was able to talk to a store clerk to let them know I wouldn't be in class. I am going to make a trip to the store to talk to the owner when I get a chance. The store clerk has no idea if a refund is possiable or normaly done/not done. I just had the clerk let the owner know that I would come by and talk to him later next week.

Avpoh8,

I'd explain to the LDS that you just weren't comfortable with the instruction and would try to get a refund, or perhaps a store credit that you'll surely use in the future. I wouldn't mention that you have found another LDS and instructor that you like better, because that's going to step on some toes. If they refuse to issue you a refund or credit, at least you are getting instruction for free from the other shop and no doubt a better experience.

Good luck,
J.

Still have not had a chance to talk to the LDS at the first shop. I have been busy with classes all this weekend.

By the way class was great!! I have learned so much and it was a lot of fun. I am very glad I switched LDS.
