The best way to preserve your air is follow the first five steps. Use your surrounds to sheild you from any current. Trim and buoyancy might also need to be addressed. I've been on any number of boats with people who dive with all of these gadgets to help stabilize themselves. I do it with my breathing. No hardware needed. The side effect of having my trim/buoyancy in control is that as big as I am, I'm almost always the guy who has more gas left at the end of the dive.
