I'm in the market for a new SPG after the 30+ year old Farallon gauge I had flooded on it's first dive in 30 years. I have it on a new hose since the fitting on the old hose was the wrong size and the choice was new hose or an adapater. I'm looking at getting a brass and glass for 4 reasons: 1) they're recommended a lot of here 2)they look sleeker 3)they don't come with a hose by default (since I've already got a basically brand new one) 4) they seem to be cheaper.

I was at my LDS the other day to see the what they had. They currently have only 2 models, a brass one and a plastic one, both in boots, with hoses. The prices are what most bothered me though... $160 for the brass and 120-something for the plastic:shocked2:. The reg is currently at the shop waiting for the service tech to tell me what I can replace it with (the girl in the shop wasn't sure if the fittings are standard, or something, but whatever, I don't have any dives planned for a few weeks anyway) and I've started looking online. Even with shipping I'm looking at half the price the LDS charges.

From what I've read, they're all pretty much made by the same company, just with different logos put on, so pretty much the only real difference is the face markings. Am I missing something? At first I didn't like the look of the black faced ones, but they're really growing on me - how do they compare to the white ones for ease of reading during daylight or in the dark?

Are all hose/SPG connections the same or should I have any concern about the SPG not fitting on the hose? Anything else I should know about the assembly? because I have a sneaking suspicion that if I buy online, the LDS won't want to attach it for me.

Thanks in advance, and I apologize for the long post.

I have not found one yet that was not "universal". Just make sure you get the air spool with it....

Wow. That price sounds very steep. I don't know the exchange rate offhand, but it still sounds crazy. I just ordered two new SPG's for $59.00 each. No hose or boot. I prefer no boot.

The black faced gauges are nice at night IMO. They don't overly glow, if that makes sense. In fact, that is what I just ordered. I only by brass.

The connections will all be the same, so no worries there. Assembly is very straight forward. Just inspect the o-rings on the spool between the SPG and the hose, and then add some lube to it.

And don't apologize for a long post. We are all long winded here, you should know that! :)

I've got an OMS brass and glass that I love. It's marked in both bar and psi, and has been very reliable. On the other hand, it aint cheap. They've been $100 and up everywhere I've looked.

I found one like it online. I know absolutely nothing about this shop or website, it just happens to have a pic of the one I use:

OMS Pressure Gauge [G-240] - $107.00 : Adirondack Scuba eScubaShop, Your Online Scuba Source

I have one of those. I have had it for ten year now. Love it! Here it is a little cheaper.
OMS SPG, Large PSI/BAR w/ Boot & HP32 [OMS-G240] - $79.50 : Cave Adventurers!, We will NOT be undersold!!!

I use a Black Faced HOG gauge...$69.99. Piranha Dive MFG carries them and since you are in Montreal, they ship it at 50% discount for international shipping. Free for domestic. They have a good selection of other makes also.

Submersible Pressure Gauges

I agree as far as a recommendation for them. They are my main retailer.

It's not the exchange rate that's the problem; last time I checked, 1 CAD was worth almost a cent more than 1 USD. In this case, I think it's the distributors tacking on their profit margin. They wanted $160 for this: SCUBAPRO - SCUBAPRO PRESSURE GAUGE (somewhere i saw MSRP was around 130.)

Awesome, thanks! I'll probably be getting a black face 2 inch HOG, since I can get it for the same price here as I could ordering from Piranha or a few others, 69.99, and not have to worry about exchange rates or cross-border shipping.
