Hi....I'd like to buy my first reel. So I'm thinking of Salvo 400' reel. (planning a cavern / intro to cave course soon)

But here in my area we have more wrecks than cave dives. So I'd like to know if Salvo 400' is not too big for regular wreck dives?? Anny coments? Other recommendations?

Thanks... GHN

PS: I have already 2 finger spools (150' /80' )

Wreck penetration I used one Halcyon partfinder 400ft and 3 defender spools

For wreck diving, the length of the line is not so much of a factor. You seldom will need more than 100 feet of line. What is more important is the thickness. In a wreck you want a thicker line. There are frequently sharp edges of steel that can cut through your line if you are not extremely careful. A thicker line will help guard against having your line accidentally cut. A thicker line necessarily means less line on the spool.

And the reason cave divers use thinner line is so we can get more on the spool. For the popular caves in Florida, 400' is more than enough so you can probably get away with using the thicker wreck line, say 200' on the spool, in most caves. Now, some of the caves in Akumal may take more than one 400' reel especially if you don't know where the hell that damn line is :)

Can someone tell me the difference size's between wreck and cave line's?

Cave line is .24gauge and Wreck is .36 Diveritexpress.com sell it some what cheep some like to buy line from the hardware store at the same thickness and look the same.

I use a Salvo 400' but immediately reloaded it with #36 for wreck diving. I think it has about 250' on it now but I did not measure exactly as I only need it to have at least 170'

It is a very nice reel but I can only compare to a reef my buddy has. I like the salvo better as it is lighter and simpler to use. And of course because it is mine ;)

If you need a salvo reel and don't have a local dealer let me know. I can help you out with a reel with either wreck or cave line on it. The salvo is a very nice reel that you will get alot of great use out of. It is the best on the market in my opinion.

I've only ever used a OMS loaded with 350' of .36 and the dive right wreck spool with I beleive with 200' of .36. The Halcyon pictured above I like the way the handle looks. My handlescome over the top of the spool and say they are wreck reels and I've seen the side handles labeled cave. I don't know. What's the diff?
