A necklace holding the mouthpiece
close when not in use is
not a suicide strap. Now Bob here describes one:
Bob3:
Heck, there was one version of US Divers reg that had the strap attachment points built into the mouthpiece.
Suicide straps keep the mouthpiece
in your mouth when you use it.
Ergo you have to undo or wrangle the strap if you have to remove the mouthpiece, hence suicide strap.
The expression is commomly used by military divers for the retaining strap on Dräger LAR O2 rebreathers. The mouthpiece has an oval pad wide enough to reasonably seal against the lips when in place, the strap keeps it there if the diver overbreathes his rig and looses conciousness. With the LAR's breathing bag being front mounted, it also aids jaw fatigue by helping to keep the mouthpiece in place against the pressure difference between lungs and breathing bag.
There are plenty of divers who want one for their rebreathers rather than using a FFM, but as all military Dräger hardware, they are hard to come by. I enclosed a pic from a unit on sale on e-bay a little while ago.
Quite a difference from what the magazine people are talking about, but when you come across such a "sexy" expression you can't just pass it up because you don't know what you're talking about. :whack:
