^^ Hey man, don't jump on me. If you re-read I am reiterating what my instructor has taught me so far. (Johnny Richards)... There should be no reason that your light be shined in the persons mask in the first place... And no reason to be jumping me for experience man, I am not trying to hit anyone up here. Just putting out there what my instructor told me.

If the light is in the left hand, it doesn't shine in anyone's eyes in an S-drill.

Love to see a pic or video of this S-drill with the reg donated "to the chest" instead of "to the needy mouth".

When I say chest. I guess I misworded it, I mean below the face basically. Do not put it directly in that persons face.

Did Mr Richards at least tell you the pro's and con's to holding it in each hand during your recent cavern class?

I personally think holding it in the right hand is easier, plus you can wrap the cord around your arm to save slack. However, during an emergency S drill, I think the left hand would be more reliable to hand it out, because the light would always face up no matter what. You just have to be sure that when you clip the light off, you don't block you long hose.

True...Johnny seemed avid to the fact you should keep it on your right hand. Always keep your light and reel in the same hand... Next time I see him I'll ask him to go a little more in depth... I appreciate people responding, but I am just a curious diver =)~ ... I am a youngin' and doin' my best to keep up with my cave training, going to school and paying for dive gear is fun!

Well, the problem then becomes there's no such thing as the "reel hand". If you're running the reel to the left side, it's in your left hand, or vice versa, which would require switching the hand that the reel is in every dive. Did you guys go to Devils ear during your cavern class, or just the eye/ballroom? If you went to the ear, you may have noticed that the traffic in there requires that you run the reel on which ever side is available, and not necessarily the side you want to run it on.

In a perfect world, I could always run the reel to the right side, and keep my left hand free to hold my light :D

haha. Yes we got to do the ear, we never dove the eye during the class. Just the ballroom and the ear... And I get where your coming from on the reel/light... I don't know, while we were doing cavern he stressed keeping the light and reel in the same hand...hmm...

My cave instructor also wanted the reel and light in the same hand, but the left; and this was NOT changed depending on which side of the cave you were running line on.

But to return to the original topic of the thread, I don't think I'll ever dive 30/30. It just doesn't make much sense to me.

Just curious, if you're running the reel on the right side of the cave, is it suggested to allow the line to come across your body? I guess it's a small issue, since your buddy is right behind you to untangle, and most all gold lines (in FL at least) are within 100ft of the cave entrance it seems. Devils ear (where the line needs to be run on the wall) is the only place I can think of where it really matters anyways.

Yes, the line goes below you. You can use your right hand as a "line guide" (although you couldn't on a scooter, so I'm not sure how that works when you get there). But scootering, of course, is the reason you're taught to use the reel in the left hand exclusively, so that when you DO get to a scooter, you don't have to change anything.
