I'm booked on the Norwegian Dawn leaving from NYC in August. Frankly, the cruise itinerary blows, but I'm sick of dragging my family through airports to get on a vacation. That's another story

We dive in Miami and in Nassau. Has anyone been on this cruise? Who are the dive operators NCL uses and what are the specifics of the dives? NCL doesn't tell you much other than the price.

TIA,

Greg

I recently dove in Nassau with Stuart Coves, and saw people from the cruise ships on thier dives. I'm sure all the dive shops pickup at all the hotels and would also pickup at the docks. The pickup times for that area were around 8am and 12 noon. That would be a two tank dive for around $80.00 plus equipment rental. The first dive would be an 80 to 100 foot wall dive. The second probably a reef or shallow wreck. You might could do it quicker by using an operator on the north side with less travel time from the cruise ship. Check online and call them for specifics.
I have had my best cruise experiences by doing my own ittenary ,such as taking a taxi instead of a tour bus etc.

As far as Nassau, depends on how much time there and when :)

I was working on a ship that was in Nassau, I generally dove with Stuarts, although occasionally dove with Nassau Scuba. Both were good, I knew the folks at Stuarts a bit more, so ended up diving with them more often. You need to make arrangements with both ahead of time, and they'll pick you up right at the dock.

Have fun!

Peace,
Cathie

Greg:
We have a member on the board, AKA NatureDiver, who works for NCL as an instuctor in their dive program.
I believe he is off in Hawaii on one of their ships now, but he checks in here when he can.
I'll send him this link.

P.S. Cruising is so much fun. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Thanks so much. It's difficult to get any details from the cruise line itself!

Hi there Greg. I do work on with NCL as an instructor so lemme see what I can find out. I just signed on to the Norwegian Majesty yesterday so I'm still getting settled in here but I will look into the Dawn's itinerary for August and find out what operators they use if I can.

Natasha-

I am supposed to be on a ship going to Hawaii right now but because of a paperwork error, I had to be sent here until it is straightened out. Should be a few weeks and I'll be on the Pride of Aloha in Hawaii.

Thanks Natasha. If you can, see if you can get an inside scoop on the types of dives they do on a regular basis.

Hey Greg. On the Norwegian Dawn's itinerary in August, there is only scuba diving in one port. Scuba diving is offered from the ship in Nassau, Bahamas and is offered by a company called Divers Haven. The dives change each time, depending on conditions. The dives are either at a shipwreck, local reef, or something called the Paradise Caves. This is an operation that is on Paradise Island in Nassau. Here is their contact info, but it looks like they have no website as of yet.

Divers Haven
Nassau/Paradise Island, Bahamas
Phone - (242) 363-3333
Fax - (242) 363-4401

I also found this, not sure which is current but you can try both.

Divers Haven
P.O. Box N-1658
Nassau, Bahamas
Phone - (242) 394-8960/8961
Fax - (242) 393-3695

This itinerary also goes to Port Canaveral and Great Stirrup Caye, NCL's privately owned island. There is good snorkeling offered on GSC, guided by NCL Instructors that live on the island full time. I have not been there yet but have heard it's excellent. Royal Caribbean owns an island nearby and I have heard of the instructors taking a boat over there on off days and diving. Maybe you could inquire about that at the Shore Excursions desk when you board the ship in August. I hope this helps. Let me know if I can be of any other assistance. If not, then come see me on the Pride of Aloha sometime. I should be on it soon and once I get there, I'll be there for a good while, unless it's vacation time of course. Because living and working on a cruise ship and guiding snorkeling trips full time isn't vacation enough. :-) Good luck and let me know how it goes!

A bit off the subject..NatureDiver, please give us a full report when you work a week or so on the Pride of Aloha. I'm very interested in cruising on that ship.

Also, thanks for helping Greg!
