Zept,

For some reason I only saw Jonathan's mail and not your extra skills mail when I posted again. Sorry about that. Must have been reading from 100' down and didn't know it. Thanks for you reply.

I'll admit it, I could use some remedial work in this area, so I am going to look into this locally. Yes, it was part of AOW, but some of us need more than that.

A fun report to read, indeed. Reminded me of the triangle navigation I did in AOW. We were a threesome & agreed to each take one arm of the triangle. Somehow, when we surfaced, we were at El Torito! (It was up on a pleasure pier, noplace near our marker!) But we were hungry, so it was just as well.:D

Not all (PADI) specialties are created equal. I've done the PADI drift diver specialty, and there was pretty much no book work; just some drift dives under an instructor. Then I did Nitrox...no comparison. I understand the Deep Dive specialty is pretty demanding as well, as compared to say Underwater naturalist.

AliKat, you're post caught my eye, and although off topic I'd like to hear what you though of the nitrox course as, you say "no comparison" do you mean just lots of bookwork?

Back on topic, I did a navigation dive for my AOW and it was a lot of fun. Having a great instructor played a big part in that.

We did squares, triangles using compass as well as natural nav. (using reef, position of sun, tide marks in the sand)

For some reason, before doing the dive, it seemed like the most impossible undertaking imaginable. On my previous dives I had no sense of where I was or the direction I was facing.

So you can appreciate that when I lead my buddy round the third turn in the square and to my complete surprise there was the home marker sitting right where I was heading I was the happiest man on the planet ! :D

I'd like to do the nav. specialty. The AOW gave me a great appreciation of taking more responsibility for my own diving and having an awareness of my surroundings and the direction I am heading relative to the boat etc.

Doing 1 "taster" dive of 5 specialties for my AOW just made me want to take the 5 specialties (and the other courses too).

You can never be too well trained.

Just lemme know when they start a "Driving to the Dive Site" specialty course. That's when I get lost!

That's what I like best about nav dives. It's such a buzz when you get it right!
