That is probably one of the most wonderful experiences in life. Coming into a highly dangerous situation and finding acceptance.

After watching the National Geographic special last night on Domeier and Fischer's work capturing live great white sharks off Guadalupe and satellite tagging them, I was getting worried that N.G. was following the path of the Discovery Channel's Shark Week... lots of thrills and chills for "good TV" but little real educational value.

At least this teaser doesn't seem to follow that same route.

No problem, I love this kind of stuff. Changing peoples perceptions about "dangerous killers".

I agree with you Bill but the sad thing for scientists is that for shows to become mainstream they have to be "dumbed down" because most of the people that watch things like shark week have very little understanding compared to scientists. I was glad to see a show where I actually learned something for once.
 
Television should be one of the best mechanisms to generate scientific literacy but instead it largely focuses on the spectacular, sensational and the absurd. Of course National Geo is one of the better venues and this leopard seal segment was indeed informative (but I sure ain't gonna try that!).

I've worked for 40 years to try to bring science to the general public in a comprehensible (and humorous) way.
 
The shot of the leopard seal next to the diver gave a great sense of the impressive size of that animal! The story was fascinating as well! I could watch NG footage all day long! Thanks for sharing.
