Tourist options--for those that asked about non-divers activities.
paradise Island itself is a tiny island which can probably be walked in 1/2 hour. Even staying on just PI there may be plenty to do--there is (well, was last time I was there) a small straw market to shop, and several "strip mall" kinds of places. Several restaurants off Atlantis's property--Atlantis is notoriously expensive. Also, late-August is VERY hot--think sand too hot to walk on (beach shoes could be wise).
Atlantis itself has tons of things to do--the aquarium/shark tanks, and the pools/water slides are pretty extensive. There is also a Club Med on PI that may also offer things to do for non-guests for fees.
On Nassau, there is an old Fort to explore; and nearby area called Arawak Key serves bahamian dishes, etc (though recommended at daytime only).
The "tourist" area is Bay Street--shops you can find in the US, and the "big" straw market, and of course, tons of jewelry shops. This is also where the big cruise ships come in, which can be amusing to look at.
If you're the adventurous type and want to get local food (deeper in the island), ask where to find Mr. T's--tiny place and generally only visited by Bahamians.
There are always tons of taxi drivers waiting for your business at the airport (if it's a heavy traffic day, be prepared for long lines through customs, and luggage is very slow to arrive...all things are on island time). Many of the taxis are vans rather than cars if you have lots of luggage, always a good option.
And, finally, just about anywhere off PI itself (and Bay street), bargaining is customary and expected--taxis, straw market, etc.
Enjoy!
