Yesterday I was doing my deep dive for my AOW class and experienced what being "narced" feels like. The plan was 120' but on our decent we stopped on an old roadbed and guardrail at 74'. Just as we approached the rail it hit me all of a sudden like a ton of bricks. I expected it to happen much deeper than this and I did'nt expect it to be this strong. I was wasted! I had a hard time concentrating on the simplest of tasks. As we stopped my instructor gave me a slate with a senario to work out and allthough I could read it I could'nt figure out how to respond, I just shrugged my shoulders. I then gave him the thubs up. He then indicated he wanted me to shoot the bag and although I knew what to do and how I just could'nt put it all together. After he shot the bag and we assended the line a few feet it went away.

Is being narced at this kind of depth typical or was this out of the ordinary? There is no way I could have made the 120' depth, if it had gotten any worse I would have been a blithering idiot! :D

hmmm... 25 meters is a little shallow but everyones different i spose.

the g/f got it at about 105 feet in the red sea, she just started sinking while watching some fish. She couldn't work out the was sinking! pulled her up about 10 feet with the tank valve and all was good again. :)

The first time I was conscious of being narc'd out of my gourd was at 117 feet. It's never happened that way again.

I think the more anxious you are the more likely you are to experience the symptoms, after diving longer at those depths you get more comfortable and don't have the same reaction.

Note, the studies show you do NOT gain anything in terms of being resistant to being Narc'd. I think you breathe better and that lets the brain get the proper amounts of O2, or at least better amounts and you don't experience the effect.

I'm not a Doctor, so it's only a theory.

LOL... at 130 feet I did a math problem and subtracted rather than adding, thus making myself carry the one. Carrying the 1 at 130ft was very difficult, but shockingly my erroneous math was correct! Everyone had a good laugh at my expense...

It felt like I drank a dozen martinis, had a couple of shots of tequila, and washed it down with some beer.

I had my first experience at 115ft a couple of weeks back. Not as enjoyable as I hoped it would be :) I was nervous about the depth and was really huffing on the reg, I'm sure that added to it. I also had a bit of memory loss after reaching that depth. I'm hoping 115ft is not my limit as I would like to give Devil's Throat a try sometime in Cozumel. I need to get a couple more deep dives in to make sure I can handle a long swimthrough while being narc'ed first though.

Been there, done that. Every diver is different and every dive is different. I've been fine deeper and I've been narced out of my mind shallower.

I still have not narced bad yet. The thought of it scares the crap out of me! My only time was at 120 ft in Ouahu. Just felt like laughing a lot but I came up about 15 feet cause my mask would flood every time I laughed & was O.K. thats when I realized I was probably narked.

I am not sure if you could tell you were narced...

If it is the first deep diving (or relevantly new), there are many factors you could feel in that way, even at 60ft, such as a water temp, viz, light, etc......

So, to know exactly if you are narced due to the depth, you have to rule out all other factors one by one....

I haven't seen that many narced divers in the warm water, high viz, and day diving compared to the cold water, muck, night diving....

First time I noticed being narced was at 90 feet in a very cold lake. I'm certain that the temp had some effect, but I don't have any studies to back me up.
We were to solve a dive table problem. I read the problem and got my slate to help me track my figures, but there was a problem. I only had two hands and one of them was occupied by the slate, so I dropped my dive light, retrieved my pencil (which was floating at the end of a short tether) and started to write down my figures. But now I couldn't see my slate, so I let go of the pencil and picked up my light. But NOW I needed the pencil again...dropped the light and got the pencil...but it got dark again... See how narced I was?
My instructor was laughing so hard I thought he was going to cough out his reg. But then, maybe HE thought it was so funny because he was narced too!
