My wife and I are starting our OW class this coming Thursday and she has a question for the ladies on ScubaBoard. My wife has long hair, about 12" below the shoulder and she is wondering what other ladies do about their hair when putting on a hood. She does not like it plastered to her neck and is interested in different ways to tuck her hair into her hood. We are going to be diving cold and will be wearing farmer Jane/John suits with hoods, boots and gloves in the Puget Sound in two weeks. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

We can't wait for class to start...

My hair is long enough to reach the small of my back. I have found that tucking it into my hood will make it tooo easy for air to get trappet. That is seriously annoying. So, what works best for me is to braid it in a couple of pigtail braids and let them stick out the bottom of the hood...

Get a hoodie

After a while a shorter hairstyle started looking a lot better to my wife. It grew on me.

Braided Pigtails. Gather the hair at the base of the neck and let them drape over the front of your shoulder or just straight down the back.
That seems to be the most comfortable style, at least from the girls I've talked to. Of course none of them had hair that long.

Edit:
Forgot to mention, if her hair is exceptionally thick she may have to put conditioner over her hair to get the hood on easily. Just a light coat though, wouldn't want to have the hood slip off. ;)

My wife uses either braided pony tails as mentioned or a French braid. Your hood will most likely be tucked into your wetsuit so you can't just hang it out. You will need to put on the hood then put your chin to your chest and roll you neck before getting the wetsuit zipped up an tightened or you won't be able to do that afterwards. Try to keep your hair in the hood if possible not going down your back then into the wetsuit, it will limit you range of motion. Tight braids help to prevent too much air from getting trapped.
