I'm a Fish!
Me and my wife desperately want to go diving we live in Virginia Beach and we only really know about LDC and dive quarters as local dive shops. The problem is their cheapest dives are 65 per person for a single day. That plus the cost of rental for my wife and air and boat tickets comes out to close to 160 or 200 depending on other stuff like nitrox fills. this is a little more then we can just drop on one day of diving.

We love to dive in Florida were there are lots of beach dive which gets rid of 130 dollars of the cost of a day of diving but we don't really know any beach dives around here.

We want to find some dives we can do with out having to pay the huge boat ticket. If there's anyone else in the area that knows of dives like this we could drive a while or even dive in murky lakes what ever it takes to get wet.

We would also like to meet some other diving couples or anyone seeing as our local dive shops don't have clubs any more.

Well it's a lot to read but let me know if any of you wonderful people want to meet up and dive on the cheap side.

hi! the best ocean shore dives in nc i'm aware of are the triangle wrecks in nag's head and radio island near morehead.

a great place to practice is lake rawlings, near the va/nc border. great clear quarry. don't pooh-pooh quarry dives - excellent place to meet people who really love to dive and practice so you stay comfortable with it.

half-day charters out of morehead might be a wonderful compromise - since you're not out as long, they're cheaper.

Warscout2... If you find something.. Please Please let me know.
I went down to Nags Head last weekend as was given the "it is to dangerous" speach on the Triangle Wrecks off Nags Head. I ended up leaving the area without a dive.

Lake Rawlings is good if you get there early. Since we live in Fredericksburg it is a couple of hours down the road.
The Fredericksburg Quarry has about 20 foot visability but is hard to get in.

Looks like we are going to have to wait till Florida Airplane tickets are cheap again.

Sapper Ancient,

Who gave you the lip on the "to dangerous" thing, the NG dive shop? They do that all the time so you go with them and pay for their service.

The best time to do them is in July and August but there are days here and there if you stop and see.

I looked into shore spots around NC when I was there last summer, and came up empty. I suppose they have quarries there like anywhere else, but this was a vacation, and we have quarries here. If you get to know some locals from SB, you might be able to dive with them. Lending out extra gear is not out of the norm between folks on the board, I've found...and that would certainly reduce costs.

Warscout,

Unfortunately, unless you make the 2 1/2 hour drive to Lake Rawlings, you have to go on a boat to get to the best diving in the area. I did hear about a spot on the north end of Virginia Beach, but nobody seems to have any details. Or they feel it is so murky it's not worth considering. There are the shore dives in Nags Head, but I don't think the dive center that is close by recommend them anymore. Also Lynnhaven Dive Center recently resurrected their club, the Hammerheads. Check them out. They may be able to help with what you and your wife are looking for.

My son and I spend alot of time in the pool at Dive Quarters. It's a bit boring, but at least you can practice.

Ted
