Last night I took my fiancee to my LDS and she started her class work. She was really scared until she went over and saw that there was really nothing to it. They are finishing up the class work today and going to the pool after lunch. I really wish I could be with her the first time she actually goes under. I am very excited and I am just hoping she falls in love with diving the same as I did. Hopefully she won't flip out underwater when the mask comes off.

Hopefully she won't flip out underwater when the mask comes off.

And if she does, she will learn to adapt. That's why it's called training.

Be supportive and encouraging and let her absorb it all.

Good luck to both of you, it's an awesome sport to share.

Pete

It is most definately an awseome sport to share and I am just thrilled that I can have her to enjoy the beauty and wonders of the underwater life. We have never enjoyed the same hobby. She likes to ride my street bike but I hate having her on the back. I love to ride dirt bikes and she hates it. But she thinks that she will really enjoy diving. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that she will because she will be the best dive buddy in the whole world.

Fantastic........just getting into the water in the first place is the big step! Once shes done the mask thing a couple of times she will wonder what the problem is!!

As was said before, be supportive without being 'pushy', which is a very fine line to tread!1

Good luck and let us know how she is getting on

Good luck to your fiance!
I had a similar experience. I also learned to dive because my boyfriend loves diving, and he wanted me to try diving. First, I had to relearn how to swim : ) . Learned swimming in grad school, then never swam. My boyfriend brought me to his LDS pool one afternoon a week for 4 months until I could pass the swim test. Then his friend, a dive instructor gave me one to one lessons.

I love diving! My boyfriend was very supportive, never pushy. He only wanted me to try it, and always said he would not be upset if I decided I didn't like it. My first few times out in OW were for me a little unnerving because I don't like water in my ears. Took me about 20 minutes to descend on my first dive, basically clung to a rock because I took my time descending. My boyfriend (also a DM) and the instructor were very patient. A group class would probably not have worked for me and I am lucky to have had the personal instruction.

Diving has brought us closer together as a couple. We are going to Curacao in March, our second dive trip together : )

Support and encouragement from the local LDS were very helpful as well.

Mask R&R can be tough, but definitely doable with practice.

Nice looking dog, goatfish :)

I have tried to be very supportive and as for pushiness I just told her I wanted her to try it and that it was very easy. I showed her all of my gear and how it worked, What it was for, How to put it together and that settled her alot. She had this huge misconception of how hard it was to do it all and after a few days and a few trys she got it.

Well think about it. From your first recollection we have been conditioned to never, under any circumstances to breathe water, to do so is to drown. So here we go swimming along in total immersion. Until you get a working understanding of scuba it's not only difficult, it's impossible and dangerous too.

Have you heard yet how she did in her first pool session?

Yay! Good job for her! Wish I have more friends who know how to dive...
