I cannot watch You Tube vids at work, but the topic has been hotly debated elsewhere.

Bottom line:

It' not worth spreading around.

A lot of people are lying and making false accusations. (I have first-hand knowledge of this.) For example, I have first-hand knowledge of one case in which a decaying line in a private cenote was changed with the land owner's permission, apparently an act that angered a self-proclaimed regional "line committe," a committee that the Mexican government has in the recent past denounced as having no authority and disbanded by government order.

Unless you have first-hand knowledge and verfiable information, do not perpetuate rumors, lies and false accusations.

The situation down there is complicated by the fact that most of the cenotes are on private property. Land owners can do what they want with or without the permission and prior approval of unofficial groups (like "line committees") who claim authority over what happens on other people's private property. And, despite any good intent, certain committees in the area are not recognized by the regional government and have ordered bythe government to cease their activities. The entire debate is actually about egos and local power struggles, not about lines or safety.

This thread should just die. Moderators should be vigilant for libelous remarks.

Hi Harry,
Can you clarify what you mean by "disbanded"? The "line committee" no longer meets, communicates, or exists???
