Anybody know if this the Sea and Sea MX-5II is any good for simple shots or is it just junk?

Depends on what quality of pics you want. The MX-5 looks like a cool little unit but in reality it's not much better than the cheap disposables....junk IMHO.
The permanent position of the strobe will produce really bad backscatter. The strobe is short, facing front, and close to the lens, which makes the strobe not much better than the internal flash on the camera.
I'm not sure about the prices, but I'd look into the Ikelite A3 or Reefmaster setups. I've seen great pics taken with both of these.
