I booked a trip to Mayan riv. for March 10 -17 a few days ago. (I am not sure if this made American News but it was a big story here in Canada) I no sooner book my trip and on the news is a double homicide at the same resort!

Boy I sure know how to pickem! The resort is the Barcelo Maya Beach/Caribe/Colonial Resort. Of course I figure the odds of it happening again are way low, but my gf thinks I should bring my dive knife -- and keep it under my pillow! :whack: Hey maybe I should get a spear gun instead!

They said on the news there have been similar security problems in the area, including a murder during a robbery last year, but I have been to this area and I thought it was very safe. Nobody else knows about problems do they?

No, but there was a murder on Cozumel when I was there last May (a domestic thing between locals), and it was very big news. I think they said that it was the first in 10 or 15 years.

This was posted on a Riviera Maya board that I visit. I don't think anyone should worry for their safety. This appears to be shaping up to be a planned murder and not a random act of violence.

Whatever the whole story ends up being, it is still very sad for the bride and groom. I cannot even imagine how they must feel and how they will ever cope with their parents being murdered while at a resort to attend their wedding.

Excerpting from the article...
Mexican investigators are trying to track down two suspects they believe are responsible for the double slaying, which they have speculated was a contract killing.

They previously told reporters that their prime suspects were two Canadian women who flew back home the day the bodies were found.

"They erased the footsteps, they erased the blood, but you could see the trail because of the work the police did," she said.

Investigators used luminol testing to detect the presence of the blood, Rodriguez said.

The trail led to a nearby room at the resort that had been occupied by the two suspects, she said.
Does sound like a planned crime with very likely Candian suspects. I generally feel safer on an island than mainland., but this could have happened anywhere.

Most random acts against tourists usually happen OFF the resort and in many cases, the victims had been drinking. No matter where you are, you should always be aware of where you and don't do anything on vacation you would not do back home.

The plot thickens?

Turns out the only reason the Mexicans thought it was two Canadian women was the hotel housekeepers smeared blood from the room of the murder to the room across the hall, when they cleaned up the crime scene before the police arrived. The "Suspects" turned out to be a pair of 30 year old moms who never met the victims and were staying on vacation in the room across the hall. Kimberley Kim, a psychology student who works part time at a hospice, and Cheryl Everall, a medical student

Mean while tBello Melchor Rodriguez y Carrillo, attorney general for Quintana Roo is the one who was caught covering up other crimes in the area previously and even was know to have kept goods from looters after the last hurricane.

After pressure from Canada the R.C.M.P have been brought in and suddenly the Mexican authorities are also are adding four hotel employees to the suspects list.

Bmader,

My sense from the early stories was that the Mexican Police seemed a bit fast in reporting that they had determined that it could not possibly have been a Mexican who committed this crime . . . in Mexico.

Please continue to post the news stories. This is story has been completely ignored in the US media.
