NARRAGANSETT — Rescue workers in this seaside town were called to the water twice Sunday afternoon for unrelated incidents that left two men dead.

The first call came in at about 1:15 p.m., when people on the rocks at the end of Hazard Avenue noticed two divers in distress.

Police Lt. William McGovern said Evan Davidson, 43, of Brewster, Mass., had lost one of his fins after entering the water and had tried to retrieve it.

“Something happened when he was in the water” and then his friend tried to help by pulling him out, McGovern said.

Davidson, described as an experienced diver, was taken to South County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, McGovern said.

The second call came in at 2:48 p.m., when a man collapsed after being helped from the water by a surfer [apparently not a diver].

Americo DiPetrillo, 53, of Coventry, was in the water north of the Town Beach, between the Dunes Club and the mouth of the Narrow River, McGovern said.

The surfer saw DiPetrillo struggling and helped him to shore, where he collapsed. Lifeguards and bystanders performed CPR.

DiPetrillo was taken to South County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, McGovern said.

The state medical examiner’s office is performing autopsies in both cases. Results were not available yesterday, an office spokeswoman said.

Narragansett police responded to a third call involving a death yesterday at 6:24 a.m., when a woman walking her dog reported an unresponsive woman behind the Atlantic House hotel, on the corner of Ocean Road and Central Street, McGovern said.

The woman, 51, from Bellingham, Mass., had been staying at the hotel with her husband. Her body was taken to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

The police “do not suspect foul play,” McGovern said.

“It looked like she might have been sitting on the curb in the parking lot,” he said.

The police did not release the woman’s name, saying they did not know if all family members had been notified.

Scuba diver dies in Bay incident
...a scuba diver exploring a shipwreck in Cape Cod Bay went into cardiac arrest shortly after surfacing in Sesuit Harbor in East Dennis said Captain Robert Brown of the Dennis Fire Department.

The man, whom officials declined to identify, had gone out early on a boat from the Dive Locker, a scuba company in Hyannis, to explore the USS Longstreet target ship, an underwater wreck between Wellfleet and Orleans in the bay.

No the second was not a diver. I knew Rico he was a longtime member of the fire department I run with. He was just swimming. However, word has it that yesterday a diver died at Conimicut in Warwick, RI. This is unconfirmed at this point. Anyone else hear this?

I haven't heard anything about it but a lot of commercial divers are working up in that area. Commercial quahog divers are up there all the time. I sailed by there last week and there were 4 or 5 quahog boats flying dive flags right off the lighthouse. There were also commercial divers doing a blasting operation to remove some large rocks uncovered when they dredged the channel right near the lighthouse.

Considering how nasty the conditions are up there, it is pretty unlikely it would have been anyone diving for fun.

He surfaced in Sesuit Harbor while diving the Longstreet? Those two areas are quite a ways away from each other. Probably just a misprint/misquote. In any event, it wasn't a good diving weekend for those three poor fellows...sad.
