Hey Folks,

I'll be moving to the Boston area for a year, starting the end of this month. The important questions are:

Is there a decent dive shop in or near Cambridge?
What is a good way to hook up with local divers or clubs?
What might the water temp be in Aug and Sept?
When does diving start up again in the spring?

Thanks much,

-- Michael

Diving is easy to find. There is a bunch of us on this board, as well as a few local clubs that dive every weekend. Some of the shops in the area have guided dives as well.

You're looking at mid to low 50s for water temps in august/september. Possibly into the 60s on the shallow stuff and down near rhode island.

If you've got a car, you'll have a ton of choices in shops, clubs, and dive locations.

Diving starts up when you're ready. I started in April last year, and I was diving wet then. I hoped to start in march this year, but I got delayed and didn't get in the water until may. There are some that dive year round, every weekend, and have done that before they had a drysuit.

Michael,

Excellent! Some quick answers:

Cambridge -- I acually work in Cambridge. United Divers in Somerville is very close by.

East Coast Divers in Brookline is also not too far away:

Local Divers & Clubs -- well, you're already here, which is a start ;-). Some of the bigger local clubs are the New England Aquarium dive club and the MetroWest dive club. NEDC meets downtown at the aquarium, so if you will be living in Cambridge, this will be the most convenient. Most area dive shops also run weekly DM-led dives on different days of the week. Here are the web-sites for these 2 clubs:

Water temp depends on location. North of Boston, the water temps never really get much above the low 60s at the surface. Farther south things warm up -- on the south side of Cape Cod and into RI, water temps in the low 70s are possible.

When does diving start in the spring -- depends on your tolerance. There are dive boats that start running in Feb. I know people that dive in wetsuits almost year round. In a thicker wetsuit, water temps generally stay in the low 50s through at least early Nov. In the spring -- temps are usually in the 40s until May. This year water temps have warmed up more slowly...in early May temps were still in the 40s in most areas around here.

Welcome.

-Chris
