My mouthpiece that came with my reg gives me canker sores because it is so fricken huge and irritates my gums on my jaw. The mouthpiece I have from my cert class is two small and water gets in easily.

Are there any mouthpieces out there designed for people like me that are not to big or to small and are made out of a soft material with no plastic flaring left on???

I may have to cancel a dive this weekend because I haven't healed from last weekend!

Grr...

MSilvia dives with a customized mouthpiece, and swears by it. They are designed like sports mouthguards where they are molded to your bite. Doing some quick searching; I'm pretty sure it's the Sea Cure that is available at my LDS [In Atkinson, NH] and I'm sure you can check with your LDS about it. Check out www.seacure1.com for more details.

Is it possible that part of the problem could be the way you are biting down hard on the mouthpiece... to much pressure?

My suggestion is to try the Seacure mouth piece... you custom fit it to your mouth by heating it in hot water and then putting it in your mouth and bitting down... this molds it to your teeth.

Also.. you can cut it down if it is too large or long.

The best part about this is that you no longer have to clamp down on the mouthpiece... it fits so well you can relax your jaw.

Nah...I worked that problem out...It took me a bit, but I realized that all I have to do is keep my mouth closed and the thing will stay in my mouth.

The problem is that the part that goes in between my lower teeth and lower lip reaches down too far, causing abrasion down near where the gums meet the lip. I can use my old, cheap mouthpiece...it doesn't hurt (and I think I can dive with it, despite the current canker sores), but it requires more effort to keep it in my mouth and water out.

I'll look around the dive shop tonight when I pick up tanks.

One of the best bang for the buck items you can buy for scuba IMO. One problem, once you use one for awhile, your hooked & won't want to go back!
