I read a post about the mosquitos at the airport on arrival,( it's open air) so we packed wipes in our carry-ons and were glad to have them.

Mosquitos weren't that bad in Bonaire, compared to other places I've been in Caribbean (St. Martin, Puerto Rico and Mexico), what we had a problem with were the damn ants. They bite and they bite a lot. Stuffed a DEET soaked towel under all the cracks in the room and it worked well.

In other words, I think the ABC's are as good as it gets when it comes to the tropics and Mosquitos. :)

Great Idea Avatar. curious where did you get the wipes? airport has been problem area since tsa involvement in travel.

I am one of those folks who mosquitoes seem to find, even when no one else is being bit, and my skin also tends to react pretty severely to bites a lot of the time, so I am always aware of the nasty blood sucking pests.

Evenings dining out, or hanging around at the resorts can be uncomfortable if I do not use bug repellant. DEET is very effective.

I do not find Bonaire any worse than nearly any other destination I have visited, in fact many places here at home are far, far worse, even my own back yard after warm wet weather. I have been in tropical areas where the mosquitoes are a 24/7 problem, but on Bonaire it is mostly after dark, as the breezes settle down that they seem to be an issue at all, except as some suggest, maybe some hiding in damp dive gear storage areas.

Being from the Southeast US, we hardly notice them when we do our November Bonaire trips. We spray our legs around sunset, and that's about it--a few bites are not intolerable. However, if you are from the Southwest or other place where mosquitoes are rare, you may find them annoying.

yep, in the Southeast the skeeters pick up small dogs and children and fly away with them.

Use a little Deet at primetime on Bonaire and they're really not a big deal.

Both Off! and Cutter (that I know of) make the wipes. We use them at ball games and such.

Up here in the NE, skeeters are FAR from rare, but as my hands, legs and face swell up pretty severely at times from their bites, I dam-sure still notice them
:shakehead:

As you suggest, though, timely application of a decent repellant easily prevents issues.

Do not take mosquitoes lightly in the tropics , I got three bites on a Bonaire trip in 09 , one was carrying dengue fever and it shut me down for the better part of three months . The bites are nothing , it is what the bug is carrying down there that packs a punch . For me , one bite is too many .

I hadn't heard about dengue (or malaria for that matter) on Bonaire. Anybody have more info? I do normally take precautions when traveling in areas where dengue and malaria are prevalent--medication, nets, DEET, etc.--but I have not been aware of a need to do this on Bonaire. On Bonaire we've just spritzed our legs the way we would at home for pesky mosquitoes, not gone to the lengths we do when traveling in malarial areas.

EDIT: I just checked the CDC web site, and while there appear to have been no reported outbreaks on Bonaire in the last couple of years, that doesn't mean there haven't been unreported incidents. There's apparently dengue in many places in the Caribbean.

It has been a problem on the ABC Islands for awhile .
2008 was a bad year and from what I can tell it gets worse every year . It is not something locals like to discuss as it is not good for business .
Bonaire is very close to South America where it is epidemic . There are boats bringing in goods daily from South America .
The only control they have is to spray for bugs , If the bugs are there and you are getting bites you are in the "Dengue Lottery".
It is the luck of the draw , three bites and I won .
When I did my research I found that Dengue is everywhere in the Tropics , I am now trying to travel in the "dry season" , the expression "once biten , twice shy" is my new motto , I would not wish a bout of Dengue on my worst enemy , sickest I have been in my life .
