We had a couple of good dives on two wrecks this weekend. We dived the Herbert early in the morning and hit the Kiowa just before noon to take advantage of the timing for slack water. The Herbert is a flattened out wooden wreck but it has a massive set of boilers and engine, as well as a huge winch, which are interesting to explore. On this day we had visibility of about ten feet with good light penetration. Most of the dive is conducted in the 90 to 100 foot range. We then headed over to the Kiowa and the guys dived on about the largest debris field that either of them had ever explored. As mentioned earlier this is a slack water dive. Most of the dive is in the 40 to 50 fsw range. Though the vis wasnt great one of the guys managed to pull a couple of decent lobsters off the wreck.
I was pleased to meet Jim and Pat from Boston Diving as they pulled up to the Kiowa with Jims beautifully restored 34 Uniflite. They have a great vessel well equipped for diving and seem to be a very competent and fun operation to go out diving with. Indecently, it was Capt. Pat that graciously gave me the numbers for both the Kiowa and the Herbert last year. Thanks again!
The day wasnt complete until after my friend Harry fostered some good will between a local lobsterman and the dive community by cutting some line from the guys wheel.
All in all it was a great Saturday of good diving and meeting new friends in outer Boston Harbor.
