We got back last night from 6 days diving in Cozumel. The information we got from the cab drivers and divemasters is that the Presidente is going to be torn down and then rebuilt.

There are at least two buildings that make up the Presidente. If true, it's possible that they mean the long low building(s) next to the water. I think that the structure of the tower section is OK.

since we are members of the presidente club they called us and told us the planned reopneing is june 1st. i can't imagine they could rebuild the whole place by then - unless they meant june 2008... scary thought actually. maybe i should call them and double check... ;-)

Thanks for the pics Antonio,

We're thinking of heading back to the Fiesta Americana in March. From your pictures, it seems like they're well on the way to recovery. Looks like the building was spared, although the dock was totally destroyed. And I thought that dock was pretty well constructed. Wow.

It was well constructed, they all were. 60 hours of pounding 15-20' foot waves will take out very sturdy constructions. Last year Ivan's NE quadrant (the most dangerous part of a hurricane) raised surf on Cayman that ripped away buildings from their foundations, they were built well too...

I just added a quickie trip to the East Side for the sunrise and got some shots of Chen Rio (49 pics).

These pictures do not look anything like Cozumel today. As I said before it is just short of miraculous that they have recovered so quickly. I left there last week and everything was in full swing. The Naval Station will take a long time to get back as will the big cruise ship piers but most of the businesses around the square were coming back strong. I can't wait until March to see how much better things are, but I'll have to.

I dont know if that has been posted before, but I got the link out of Antonio's slide show.....wow.......awesome pictures in there of the wave action! Truely amazing!

Funny you got it from my slideshow, I got it from Scuba Board.

:D

Did you see my store yet señor???

I was just amazed by the waves and how far up the water came with the storm surge!!!! Knowing how far off the water Scuba Club sits, and to see the waves higher than the first floor is just almost too hard to believe!

Speaking of cruise ship piers.......anyone (Antonio!) know if/when/where they will rebuild them?
