First of all I'd like to express my admiration and moral support to all PSD's, you're doing a great job and I'm impressed by your work and also intrigued.

It wasn't untill very recently that I actually got to know about your field of work, due the fact that one of my students (I'm an Instructor Trainer, recreational diving) has a copy of the 'Encyclopedia of Underwater Investigation' by Cpl. Robert G. (Bob) Teather C.V., Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which I'm currently reading.

Very interesting reading which sheds a lot of light on a few accidents that I was involved in (as a search diver).

My question is, are there more information/books out there similar to the mentioned Encyclopedia.

Bob Teather's book is the BEST available and I know of no other that comes close. I am uncertain if you are aware but there is a "Study Guide" that accompanies the book.

Following Bob's death, Bill Heckler (same family as Heckler & Kosh) took over the Underwater Investigator program and Mr. Heckler continues to update the material and lecture on the subject on a regular basis. I believe Bill Heckler will be lecturing on Underwater Investigations during the International Water Rescue Conference scheduled for Colorado Springs, CO in September.

I will post additional information on the IADRS membership meeting and water rescue conference when details are finalized.

Regards,

Blades Robinson

There is another good reference book on the market, Public Safety Diving by Butch Hendricks. You can find them on Amazon. Please keep in mind that it is reference book and does not turn you into a PSD by reading the book.

To complete the learning process, you would need to stay at a Holiday Inn Express while reading the book. LOL!!!!

Blades - Sorry for the LGS Plug!

Don't worry Dan,

I'm not planning on becoming a PSD. Will have a look for the Butch Hendricks book.

Blades,

It's new to me that Bob died, did he die of natural cuases or during duty and how long ago did he die?

Non dive related. Very sad that he's gone.

There is also a book by Mark Phillips called PSDiver-A textbook of Public Safety Diving.

And one by Mark Lonsdale called SRT Diver, but that book pushes more on the military type diving/frogman stuff.

We just got the Encyclopedia of Underwater Investigations for our team, and are completing the class now. Very interesting and detailed.

Gary ... thanks for covering while I was "off list."

Bob passed away on November 15, 2004 but had been very ill for a number of years. His contributions to public safety diving are too numerous to list in one evening but every public safety diver can be thankful for Bob's contributions to the industry. Being a Canadian who traveled often to the United States to lecture on the subject, he was affectionally referred to as the "Ambasador to Public Safety Diving" by many who respected his contributions.

There are several publications that survive Bob...

The Night Before the Dive – Cpl. Robert Teather. A 3-part audio cassette addresses common pre- and post-dive stress emotions.

The Next of Kin – Your Most Valuable Resource - Robert Teather. A two (2) tape audio cassetteintroduces the public safety waterrescue team to the techniques of working with grieving families andwitnesses. (I have these two tapes in the glovebox of my car!)

What is a Public Safety Diver? – K. Burton and R.G. Teather. A 15 minute video that answers ... "What is a public safety diver."

Scarlet Tunic Vol 1 and 2 – Cpl. Robert G. Teather, Two books about the RCMP and some of Bob's adventures.

Merlin - Robert Teather. A fictional story about the life and challenges of a public safety diving police officer.

My friend, I am smiling here and thank you for your concern. :rofl3:

While many may disagree with some of the LGS techniques, MANY are valid and are identical to the techniques in the DRI book, The Dive Rescue Specialists Manual. For those who don't know better though, it may be difficult to pick out what is "good" and what is "bad." I respect the author for his opinion and to his credit I purchased a used copy off of www.ebay.com.

I was also able to purchase two Dive Rescue Specialists Manuals off of E-Bay too!

Hi Blades,

Any suggestions on how to get hold of these publications?
