moray eel vs Gopro - YouTube

(suckers were definetly onto something-it wasn't even nightfall yet and everything was being checked over intently).

Shows cameras performance in moderately low light conditions...images slightly less sharp. Anything much dimmer than this(clear water with some suspended particles, near surface at sundown) and the camera starts getting really grainy. I shot some video over the sand flats in the evening light and it came out pretty grainy...but I doubt any affordable HD video cameras can do much better in low light(Contour claims they've updated their sensors to work in low light...but the HD hero gopro is also better than its predecessor in this regard, albeit slightly) Guess I should attempt to rig up a little light? Man this is a slippery slope...

Indeed it is-it is amazing what this setup can accomplish! With the SRP blurfix mod this camera takes video way better than I thought I could afford.

I'm really glad the guy had that good an outcome from his reconstruction. But I hope anyone watching the video takes away that a) it is extremely foolish to feel wild predators, especially with something that resembles human fingers, and b) that it took a lot of feeding and teasing to end up with the eel doing this.

Joe nice videos! Where were the eel & goat vids taken, both at Cat? Conditions & landscape looked awesome compare to the few LJ dives I have under my belt at this point..

Marty: I did some reading after this encounter-I'll definetly be even more wary around these guys...heard a few stories from lobster divers of slice tendons/stitches beforehand so of course I was cautious-but people tend to hype up animal bites. When the eel came up I wrapped my fingers around the staybase so nothing stuck out and kept them well back and out of the way. I was not expecting this at all as you can see in the footage the eel actually comes for the camera from about 10 ft away!

Slater: I've only taken video in Catalina so far-the majority of it from a single cove. Yeah-visibility tends to be good. Supposedly in El Nino years 80ft viz is not unheard of...but with La Nina as of late it can get soupy on the occasional day-but a bad day in Catalina is good viz just about anywhere else I've dove.
