The family is planning a trip to Monterey in April. I think it will be April 5-7.

I was planning on taking my daughter, who is new and not a real strong diver, to San Carlos beach or Lovers point.
We've both dove San Carlos many times and would like a different easy shore dive.

Then I remembered Point Lobos, never been there.
I checked the web site and it looks nice.
I'm leaving the kayaks home and don't want to take her for a long swim.
Is it a good shore dive in the cove? We don't need fabulous, just fun.

Thank you, Alan

Pt. Lobos is a fine shore dive, though the good stuff is
a bit of a kick. Usual procedure is a surface swim to the
mouth of the cove, drop, and swim back UW. Obviously
you need to know how to use a compass.

You don't want to dive the area around the launch ramp,
it's pretty boring.

April 5-6-7 is Mon-Tu-Wed, and you can proabably get in
without a reservation. If you really meant April 3-4,
that's full.

The Monterey Express often goes out on Wed. if the they
get a quorum.

Do Pt Lobos if you can. IMHO it is much preferrable to the bay. I has a reef, walls and pinnacles.Be sure to bring buddy, C card and a reservation. Surface swim is manageable that time of year because kelp should be thinner. Chuck is right about comopass skills but unless you are 180 degrees off you wont get into any serious problems.

Have fun

Thanks for the advise. We will be there on 5-6-7 and plan to dive on 6&7. Should be able to get in easy enough.

Now we hope the weather will be nice. If not, we have our members passes to the aquarium as plan B.

Thanks again.

Update: We went to Pt Lobos on 4/6/04. What a neat place! Got there early and grabbed a good parking place. Three other teams arrived after us. Loaded up and went in. We kicked out as Chuck directed and dove back towards the ramp. Wave action kept us from going very far out towards the mouth. The first dive was about 20 minutes. My daughter was holding my hand and I could feel her shaking from the cold.
She was too cold to go in for another so I asked the couple next to us if I could join them on their 2nd dive. We made a quick one out towards the middle reef.

Highlight of the 2nd dive was the clouds of baby fish along the reef. There were bazillions of them and they shined when the sunlight hit them. I'm glad I was able to do the 2nd dive. Many thanks to the nice couple from Roseville!

Thanks again to Chuck and Brian for your advise. We enjoyed the park and plan to come back again.
