I've been hearing a few rumors that a dive shop opened up on the quary in Monroe, MI. A search of the Internet turned up "Monroe Diving Center" being very close to that quary. However apparently the shop itself doesn't have any presense on the web.

Just currious if anyone knew anything about them.

I found two addresses for them.

1245 S. Monroe Street
5955 W. Dunbar Rd. Monroe 48161

I tried to call them, but there was no answer or voice mail. So it doesn't sound too promising.

I live fairly close to Monroe, but I use a dive shop in Toledo. I have stopped at the dive shop in Monroe to ask about this quarry, and was told (last summer) they were working on insurance and if I saw a dive flag posted, they were diving. I haven't ever seen a dive flag posted. I have also been told that the viz is horrendous because of all of the stuff that was dumped in that quarry, but I have never dove in the quarry, so it is all speculation. I do not believe that the dive shop has a web site. I do know that I rarely see cars in front of the dive shop when I have driven by, so I don't know how often they are open.

I finally stopped on the way back from White Star and noticed that they have hours like 3-8 or something like that M-F and 12-5 on Saturday. Unfortunately it was Sunday and I haven't had a reason to go back down there.

I did do a dive in the quary a couple of years ago and it was very poor vis. But they were still filling it then and there was a lot of construction around it. Driving by the water looked very blue and quite a bit higher, so hard to say what it is like now.

A couple years ago (maybe 3) there was a dive shop working with one of the quarry owners to open the quarry to divers. I can't remember the name of the shop right now but it was North of Monroe. The shop had a couple dives there for their store club members. Rumor also was that it wasn't going to be open to the public, only the dive store club.

Last year I called the shop to find out what the status was and was told that the owner that was working with them died. The other onwers didn't want to have anything to do with diving in the quarry and their efforts had stopped.

Perhaps something else is in the works. It certainly would be nice to have another dive hole locally.

That was Scuba Centers in Lincoln Park. I don't know about the owner dying, and the shop says they still have a contract. Not sure about that, or if its even enforceable. But with all the construction, the quary filling and everything else it wasn't a great place to dive.

It might be better now, but its definitely not developed and there isn't that much there. Of course, given gas prices, I might just be willing to put up with that.

I was more currious about the Monroe dive shop than anything else.

Just talked to our LDS owner. He says a quarry south of Monroe (by the McDonald's, so it must be the Dunbar Road address) is being prepped for diving. He didn't know a date but it supposedly will be in the near future.
It has diving to 120' (or so he says) but will require a boat.
Stay tuned!
