“Hovsgol Nuur: Diving in the Land of Chinggis Khan” will have its world premiere on Saturday, September 6, at 1:15 p.m. at Singapore's Chamber of Commerce on 47 Hill Street. Presented by Scuba Diver AustralAsia, full details and registration are available at Scuba Diver AustralaAsia - Scuba Insider.

This 47-minute documentary made from last year’s diving expedition to Mongolia’s Lake Hovsgol follows the team as it seeks to identify, observe and film the lake's nine known fish species in their natural environment. The team also sought to observe mankind’s impact on the lake, both historically and currently, including exploration of known shipwrecks in the lake and search for others, such as downed cars and trucks, and Buddhist idols allegedly thrown into the lake in the 1930s.

Produced and directed by Steffan Schulz, creator of the award-winning “Destination Diving” series, some of the footage was broadcast by Mongolian television about a week after the expedition ended, allowing the Mongolian people a glimpse of their nation's underwater environment for the very first time.

Expedition leader Steven Schwankert (MI ’05) will present the film. A native of New Jersey, Schwankert founded SinoScuba, Beijing's first professional dive operator, in 2003. Since then he has led the exploration of a submerged Ming Dynasty city in a lake in eastern China, and this summer dived an underwater section of the Great Wall. He is currently finishing a book about a groundbreaking underwater discovery made off the Chinese coast, due out next year from Hong Kong University Press.
