Went to Beaufort NC this week for some diving. Here is my report of some things I saw.
I hit high tide at Radio Island on Monday. I had a 50 minute dive. Water temps were near 80. Vis was 10-15' Really nice dive. Small tropicals, toadfish, sea spiders, arrow crabs, blennies.
Monday afternoon, we ran a trip to the Indra aboard Sea Quest II from Discovery Diving. We made the one long afternoon dive. Water temp was near 80. Vis was 20-25'. Lots of baitfish, barracuda, spadefish, toadfish, and blennies. Seas were about 1'.
Tuesday we ran a charter aboard Sea Quest II from Discovery Diving to the Caribsea. We made 2 dives there. Vis was excellent from the surface to 65' the last 15'-20' to the bottom, a slight thermocline dropped water temps to the mid 70's and visibility to 20-25'. Caribsea lived up to its name as a shark wreck. A bow mast provided an awesome perch at 60' to watch 30+ HUGE Sand Tiger Sharks swimming in the current. On the wreck, smaller 3'-5' sand tigers cruised around as the groupers swam freely with their toothed escorts. The top of the boilers and the engine are at the top edge of the thermocline. I found 2 small nudibranchs on the engine. Spotted morays were scattered around the wreck. Schools of baitfish, spadefish, and barracuda swam lazily around the clear water above the wreck.
