My son got the Sherwood Navigation Console when he started diving. I was thinking of getting him an entry level computer to replace the depth gauge in the console. Are most modules the same size? I haven't been able to find much information on the diameters of the pucks and I don't want to purchase anything that won't fit. Is he limited to Sherwood since that's who makes the console or are there other companies that I can look at?

Thanks.

I think you will have challenges. My Mares Puck can be used in a console or wrist strap, the module has lugs for pins to ensure it stays in place, so even if it appeared the rights size it would not fit.

You could also consider a wrist mount option, and keep the current console intact. This may give more options and future flexibility.

It might help if you posted a link to the console in question. There appear to be several of them - the Profile and Insight lines.

Profile:

Welcome to Sherwood Scuba! - Profile Computer
Available in console, wrist mount, hose mount and capsule only configurations.

• Easy console upgrades: ProFile fits all current Sherwood consoles and can be used as a replacement for the depth gauge.

They don't seem to specify a diameter though.

For the Insight they give the size:

The InSight and the pressure gauge have a 1.75" diameter.

But there's no mention of replacement.

I don't actually know if there's two different sizes or just two different product lines.

fwiw, a few years ago Suunto computers were bigger than standard sized consoles. I don't know if that's still the case.

I think Oceanic's are pretty standard sized - I've seen one loose out of a boot - but don't rely on that.

An entry level option might also be the Genesis React Pro since:

Computer will fit both Genesis and Sherwood current consoles since 2006, as well as many current consoles from Oceanic and Aeris.

Or the Resource Pro:
Computer will fit both Genesis and Sherwood current consoles.

Personally I'd get the two-button model..

might be worth spending a few bucks more and getting a Hollis DG03 depending on what type of diving he wants to move up to. Buying any computer that doesn't read out Avg. Depth and has a Gauge mode basically makes it a glorified paper weight if you move into any technical diving, and with the DG03 on sale right now for $250 it's a steal.

Computers in the consoles are fine, but I find wrist mounted ones much more versatile, especially since it allows the SPG to come out of the console onto a shorter hose so it is clipped off out of the way. The DG03 does have AI if your son is interested in that as well, I don't necessarily recommend it, but you can buy the transmitters pretty cheap from Dive Gear Express when you buy the computer.
