When I learnt to dive I was given 2 mnemonics to help remember what to do just before descending and ascending. I can't quite remember exactly what they were.

Is there anyone out there who can confirm if the following is correct...

Before descending...S.O.R.T.E.D
S...ignal
O...rientate yourself
R...egulator (put it in)
T...ime (Check it)
E...levate (your BCD thing....the thing to add or remove air in your BCD)
D...escend

Before ascending...S.T.E.L.A
S...ignal
T...ime (Check it)
E...levate (Same thing as above!!!)
L...ook up
A...scend

Is this correct???

Ascents and Descents.
Remember the two acronyms for ascents and descents:

Descents-SORTeD.
Signal (to your buddy) Orientate (to two points on the surface, so you know where you are when you come back up) Regulator (to replace your snorkel) Time (check, so you can keep track of your dive time) Descend (slowly, equalizing early and often and within arm's reach of your buddy at all times)

Ascents-STELA.
Signal, Time, Extend (reach up with your right arm above your head as protection, and hold your BCD hose up to deflate your jacket as you ascend; it will avoid an out of control ascent) Look (above and all around you) Ascend (no faster than your smallest bubbles, at the same rate as your buddy and turning a full circle to see any potential hazards)

Thanks TRIG.

I think I had my E from sortEd as Elevate your BCD hose.

Anyway I appreciate the clarification.

Another reason you "can't have the E" is that PADI (I see you were certified PADI) teaches a 5-Point Descent and 5-Point Ascent, so the E would be inflationary (with apologies to Victor Borge).
