Lower Hutt police say they have found the body of a diver reported missing in Lowry Bay.

Police were called at 11 o'clock this morning after the diver failed to surface when expected.

The Police National Dive Squad searched the area and found the body at about 5pm.

They are providing support to the next of kin.

I am constantly amazed by the number of diving deaths in NZ. Smaller population than Sydney but large number of deaths. I presume the main reason is many untrained people and also trained people getting distracted when hunting underwater.

Diving, whether SCUBA or apnoea is a means to gather seafood. Only a small proportion of the diving population are daft enough to jump in to the sea just to look at fish. In general, I would say that less attention is paid to training and equipment maintenance than in other countries. Couple this with the Kiwi "she'll be right" attitude and a harsh environment (e.g. cold water and big seas) and you have the outcomes that we see.

EDIT: This relates to people organising their own diving and diving from the shore or a private boat. International visitors diving with dive centres can expect a high standard of care in general.
