I got back from a a few weeks in chuuk and palau yesterday :( both liveaboards Thorfinn and ocean hunter 1 respectively. If you have the bucks i would say this is the only way to go in either of these destinations. The land based in chuuk is pretty average and only do 2 dives a day unless theres more than 2 keen for a third, compared to 5 a day on the thorfinn. Palau seemed to be the same with the day boats hitting the same sites everyday...blue corner, blue hole and german channel....and neither do night dives i think. Plus i dont think you want to hang out in chuuk to much its a s#$@ hole palaus better but night life there isnt that great with kramers being the place for forieners, theres a local bar scl i think its called, open late but does get a little rough :) diving in both places is pretty wicked with chuuk being my pick, palau has had some pretty bad bleaching but there is alot of nice soft corals and alot of new hard coral growth, it would have been spectacular 20 years ago, not so much now.

Thanks for the reply Jon, and I am also looking for remote , unheard of (if that is still possible ) dive sites. The ones I can say you should have seen it 20 years ago types. I don't care how hard it is to get there as once I'm there ............SO BE IT! Little dive shop, no electricity, and coolers like it used to be is fine with me. I don't need an airconditioner................just GREAT diving. I am coming from the West Coast of Canada ( Bamfield) Look it up! So I wanna do it right. Thanks again for the replies!

I have been to Palau and Truk....unless you are 100% into mostly merchant wrecks....pass on Truk. Palau is my favorite been there 7 times. I dive with Keith at Palaudive.com....The operator used to head up Sams diving now back running his operation. Do not go to Palau for the corals go for the diverisity...it is the best. For corals go to East Timor...loved that place.

If you want remote try Kosrae & Pohnpei (SP)...I just read a write up on undercurrent...sounded great.

If you want an out of the way Islands Pohnpei and Kosrae are just East of Truk. You will be the only person on the dive boat. I had friends go there for two weeks of diving. They were able to have case of beer delivered to their grass hut that they rented for the stay. For travel info. www.mdaguam.com . On Pohnpei you will see more mantas than on Yap. Kosrae has no plane or diving on Sunday (family day)

Still on a little rock in the Pacific

Guesswho, are you a fan? I am planning the same trip for April. When are you going. We will do the Thorfinn Apr 22 07 for a week with a stop in Pohnpei on the way and then off to Yap and Palau. Hope to do BBE in Palau but could be booked. Check my thread also. Still working on hotels and LDS's. James.

Check out chartering the Eclipse through Samstours.com. 48 footsailboat that will take you wherever you want. Definitely hit some spectacular little known sites while we were with them. About the same price as a liveaboard.
