I know of a few fishing charter boat operators that keep a stand-by list. This is a list of fairly local fishermen that the charter operator keeps that when they have a vacancy on a charter that the operator can plug in to fill the charter on fairly short notice. Usually the stand-by person gets a substantial discount, usually around 50% off of the regular charter price. This allows the operator to make a little more profit or not cause a financial hardship on the rest of his customers, depends on payment method. I even got 75% off when I would do multiple trips and became accustom to the operators boat, equipment and methods (I could fend for myself and he didn’t have to baby sit me).

Does anyone know of any dive operators in Michigan doing this?

Minnow,
When I get done jumping through all the new red tape layed on Charter Boat Operators this spring and have my boat running, you can come down to the shop and purchase a "Stand By" ticket good for 5 trips for $250. I had thought about selling them last year to help fund the fees & equipment to finish up my boat but I was too far from getting it in the water and I didn't want to listen to any grumblings. But now I can indeed see light and was really confident it was happening until last week and the multitude of regulations popped up.
