Today I went diving with Mestizo Divers in Cozumel with Freddy Contreras and Enrique.
IT WAS AWESOME.

These guys take you to some great places, they give you some awesome local fruit and are very accomodating.

These guys are top notch and they ONLY take a maximum of 6 divers at a time.

Anyone coming to Cozumel I recommend these guys.

I have dove Dive Palancar, SCUBA DU, Papa Hoggs, DWM, and Aqua Safari ( Freddy used to work for AS I think) and these guys are numero uno.

If you want personalized diving service and a very relaxed roomy boat ride go with this dive charter.

Scuba Diving in Cozumel with Mestizo Divers - Cozumel

Thanks

did indeed work for AS, quite awhile I believe. He taught Jeremy, whom I dive with, along with many others. He did a class for my daughter and ran me out as I was hovering! LOL Just a concerned DAD, ya' know. Good Luck Freddy!

If you dive with them everyday, do they take your equipment and set it up the next morning. Do they set it up for the 2nd dive as well? If not, who does this in Coz?

I am late with letting everbody know how my dive trip went with Mestizo Divers back in June. Came online to report and just happened to see this thread.

Yes, they do set your gear up for you the first dive and second dive. In fact when we dived with Freddy for a 3 dive day they set our gear up for all 3 dives.

I cannot agree more that Freddy, Enrique and Rene were absolutelty top notch. I will never dive with anyone else in Coz. Can't beat only 6 divers each dive. Although Freddy's personal boat was down due to the engine having a cracked block (which he will have replaced with a brand new engine by December), the replacement was very comfortable. The Gypsy is owned by his next door neighbor and by the way is Rene's father. Enrique is the best Captain in Coz and was always there to pick us up.

We enjoyed diving with personal friends of Freddy, Jim and Pat the entire week we were there.

We stayed at the Cozumel Palace (which we are members) and loved it. Palace Resort treated us like Kings and Queens as usual. Food was very good and one of the Restaurants had a great selection 100% Blue Agave Tequilas (I counted about 10 top notch brands). We loved the snorkaling just off the pool.

The dive personel at Aqua Safari (yes, Freddy did work for them for years) are great. Each day that Freddy dropped us off at Cozumel Palace Pier (which we were not charged to use) there were several staff waiting to greet Freddy, they love this guy.
Aqua Safari bailed me out the first day of diving when I had discovered that my reg free flowed on me. One of the very nice staff loaned me her personal Reg while they repaired mine.

Freddy picks you up where you are staying, he stores, rinses your gear and has it ready for you the next day of diving. I totaly agree the fruit was great. Here's a little secret of ours, Freddy, Rene, and Enrique really loved when we brought sweet rolls that we grabbed at breakfeast before they picked us up every morning.

Freddy also loves to inform you about the history and lore of Cozumel.

If you want to experience more intimate diving and be treated like old friends, you will love Mestizo Divers. You will also love Freddy's honesty and his quick response to any questions asked via email.

I just finished booking 2 weeks in Coz for March of next year and am booking with Freddy again. Heads up, Freddy!!

Nearly all the ops in Coz set up your equipment on first and 2nd dive if you wish. A large number will also keep your gear. Ask what they will do re wetsuits (not all will keep) and lso what they do re rinsing.

And I believe 6 divers per DM is the rule in Cozumel....pretty much everywhere I've seen has that limit, except for perhaps Dressel. In fact, I've only been in a group of 6 a couple of times....most of the time it has been 4 or less. Still, may give these guys a look in a couple of weeks when we are down there....my dive buddy will be brand new and a nicer than average boat would probably go a long ways towards sinking that scuba hook nice and deep. Get em addicted first....then let them dive out of six packs with no shade....hehehe :)

You can't go wrong with Freddy, he will take good care of you'r buddy. You are absolutely right about the 6 packs. When we were diving with Freddy one day it started pouring sheets of rain after our 1st dive, I really felt sorry for all the people I saw in the 6 packs. Felt great to have cover from the rain and sun. I am not sure what boat Freddy has been using since his has been down, if it is the Gypsy it is slow ( Freddy says who's in a hurry, we are here to have fun),but very roomy and lots of cover. Freddy had us back to the Cozumel Palace by 12:30 every day and we had plenty of time to to kick back by the pool the rest the day.

One of the things that I like about Freddy is that he feels strongly about the diver's comfort.

IMO diving with Freddy is unmatched in Cozumel and pretty much every where else I've been. Mestizo Divers is top notch! Its too bad his boat was out while you were there. That is one awesome boat.

Freddy is also the best scuba instructor I've met anywhere. I credit him for my diving skills and now recommend him to people who need help and of course to anyone looking to become a better diver.

For anyone looking to dive with a small group, customized service, fast boat (with a head and protection from the elements), very experienced staff, local owner and overall great fun, Mestizo Divers is a great option.

I'm looking forward to seeing them all when I head to Cozumel in a couple of weeks.

Bonnie, it was your review of Cozumel dive ops that made me finally decide on using Freddy. He asked me how I was referred to him and I sent your link to him. He remembered you and spoke highly and of great respect of what you have accomplished since training with him. Thanks so much for steering me to him.

I have been diving with Freddie several times. He certified most of my wifes family while he was with AS and did our AOW this past Oct. He is such a good friend to all his divers. Where as other places might have 6 people to one DM but you have 2 or 3 groups on a boat. Freddie only takes a max of 6 period. As of Oct he had his nephew Carlos with him and the boat was up and running. Also if any of you are going in a larger group, 4 or more, I think he is going to be offering some all day excursions to dive the East side of the island doing either 2 or 3 tanks dives. I think the time frame is april may weather depending of course. I also believe that there would be a shore lunch in there. Check with him as he was talking about it with us.
