I'm a Fish!
In an effort to fight Shark Fin Soup consumption I want to attack on a medical front.
If anyone has data on Mercury levels in different Shark, webs, charts, raw data, whatever you might have please direct it my way.
I also believe this is a way to fight the shark cartilage pill industry.
I but I need the data to back it up.

Another idea I had was to confront the issue of Shark Fin soup with Asian college students. Let's address this with the future soup clients. If we can give them info to persuade their parents that shark is not healthy to serve we might make some head way. No bride wants to serve her groom something that might cause sexual disfunction which is what Mercury levels in humans can do. Any ideas you all may have on this would be welcome.

This is great, thanks!!

EDIT: for those who might be interested in this, I found a general graph of seafood and Mercury at the American Heart Assoc.
http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3013797

They list shark at .99 parts per Million
only Tilefish and Swordfish on their chart are higher.

The swordfish part I find particularly interesting as Dole Salads advertisement is portraying Swordfish as healthy for you. I personally find their advertisement with the dead swordfish offensive and wrote and told them so. Would we be less offended if someone was holding a dead chicken? Just my point of view, I digress....

I would recommend getting in contact with the Shark Conservation agencies like the Shark Alliance and the Shark Research Institute. As part of their efforts, sampling is taken of both living and dead specimens of a variety of species. They would be able to give you the most up to date information.

Hi, I unfortunatley do not have any information, but I do find this really interesting. I am a student at the College of William and Mary, and we are having the Mercury expo here this weekend and all I have been hearing about for the past month in biology lab is mercury affects, but mainly on birds and in frogs. So I find the idea of relating it to sharks really cool. I am interested in pursuing marine science, specifically sharks. So, thank you for this new way of looking at mercury, I guess.

HI Sara, a lot of attention has been given to Mercury and our ocean creatures lately. It's especially important to get the word out on Mercury in Sharks, Tuna, Swordfish and Whale/Dolphin as conservationists are desperate to get people to stop eating them.

Good luck with your studies.
