Thanks, guys. The spoonbill was a fairly rare sighting in the area, and it was so pale that I didn't recognize it for what it was until it landed, which began an hour of sneaking my bateau through hyacinth to get close. Here's another spoony taken at Lake Martin, LA showing the mature color. -Clay

Wow! This is awesome. If you don't mind would you care to share your exif on this one?

Hey, thanks, guys. The mature bird at Lake Martin was a whole lot easier to get than the juvy near Alligator Bayou. There is a rookery at Lake Martin, and a dirt road circumvents it. All I had to do was get there by 7am (only about an hour's drive from my house), find some birds close to the road, and set up. Bird photogs from all over are there--lots of them with big bazooka lenses mounted on their car windows. That shot was made with a D70s and a Sigma 70-300mm lens racked all the way out on a sturdy tripod. I've since sold the D70s and gotten a D200 and a D80, but the lens is a very good one for the price. The juvy was taken with the same lens on the D80 on a tripod in a small boat "anchored" in water hyacinths. I have another shot taken on the same day at http://claycoleman.tripod.com/id338.htm Incidentally, a few weeks after these photos were made, the birds suddenly abandoned their nests. Nobody is sure why. We'll see if they return next Spring. -Clay

Thanks for that info. I have your old setup and I've gotten good results when using the sigma 70-300. Not ready to upgrade just yet, I'll wait for the d200s :D

but before that I need some hot lenses first, a 18-200mm VR and 105 VR . All Nikons, of course:D
as much as I would love to have the 18-200 vr, I think I'll just go ahead and get the 70-300 vr. I need that extra 100mm for races and I need that vr when shooting above 70mm (not very steady hands :D ). I'm having a hard time justifying all that cash for the macro (I don't really shoot macro). BTW, do you have a flash?
