Hey guys

I am heading t Melbourne in a couple of months for my Master Degree. However, I wanna know is there any closest place to dive in Melbourne? Also I have been diving for maybe 50 -60 dives and I have never once exprerience in facing dangerous sharks such as great white sharks and tiger sharks. Is it safe diving there? :D

Ok I am a new diver but many people I know seem to dive at Portsea or Queenscliff. There are other spots scattered around the bay too, but I know for a fact you can get boats from the two locations I mentioned. There are some nice dives like Portsea Wall (15-33m), Pope's Eye (12m) and a number of wrecks. You can do pier/shore dives at Portsea, Point Lonsdale, Rye, Mornington and lots of other places.

Where abouts will you be living? From the city it is about an hour and a half drive to many dive sites.

Descriptions of some sites
Welcome to Dive Experience No direct link so go to 'Diving' on the left and then 'Dive Site Descriptions'.

Umm as far as sharks go, I don't think you have to worry. :P I think that gets beaten up in the media. Going to dive with sharks tomorrow... but that is in the aquarium haha.

my understanding about melbourne is you have to drive about an hour to get to the dive sites

i was divign with a guy from melbourne over easter

he was saying its either 3hr shore dives in 8mtrs of water (the pier everyone talks about) or boat dives where 20mtrs+

after talking to him i now understand why so many divers in melbourne dive on twins/wrecks

cheers

There's a couple of shore dives around piers that are a little bit closer, but for the most part, yeah - it takes me about an hour and a quarter to get to Portsea from the centre of town. Queenscliff (on the other side of the heads) is about the same, only in the other direction. The boats go to the same dive sites (more or less) from both.

trip report with pics is expected & have fun!
Yep, my mum will be taking pictures and my boyfriend will be filming it! Really excited as I love sharks. :D

Wow, how do you get there so quick? I think I must be doing something wrong as it always takes me at least 1.5 hours even if I speed a bit... I go all the way up the Frankston Freeway, then through Springvale, then Monash Freeway...

Thedude, plan well in advance with your accommodation. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but we are in a massive rental shortage in the city at the moment so start looking long before you get there! Sometimes offering a few months rent in advance will get you a place, a lot of friends have done that.

Wow!! so many reply in 24 hrs. Thanks a lot guys all the suggestions help me a lot :D
