Im going to melbourne next Feb to June for a student exchange. Are there any dives/snorkeling that are close to the CBD? Any charters that could supply equipment at the site since I won't have a car?

Or will I have to make friends with someone who owns a car?

Thanks, Katy

There are a few spots close to the CBD, but they aren't as good as places around Portsea and Queenscliff. There is Williamstown shore dive - you enter in via the Surf Life Saving Club. Sandringam/Black Rock has the Cerberus but you can't dive around it - but apparently there is a reef not far. People speak well of Rickett's Point Marine Park but I have never dived there. You would still need a car to get to those places though unfortunately :(

With gear hire, the charter I go on hires it out, gear hire won't be too much of a hassle for you if you dive anywhere around the local diving spots. The store is right next to the pick up point in Portsea (and in Queenscliff they take you down in a bus from the store).

But yea, you can make friends with me if you want and I can show you around :) I live close to the CBD but go diving every weekend and am happy to show vistors around!

For more info go to diveoz.com.au and go to Info Directories from the left side menu. It has information about Victorian diving. :)
