I am trying to remember a prototype Meg I dove before public release. It had Will Smither’s original code & can't remember the HUD.

Pretty sure you can't remember because the Will Smither's Meg didn't have a HUD. Details again I know.;)

Cheers

Al

I had the opportunity to dive a Smithers Meg. Going through a class where everyone else had Apecs electronics made for some fun when dealing with the handsets!!

Most of the close-up shots (where you would see the HUD) were shot in the pool (with a cave built in) in Romania. The max depth was 15 feet, most of us run the units on 0.7 setpoint and managed the PPO2 manualy to avoid unexpected O2 injection when we had to hold our position.
Whenever you see actors faces with the HUD underwater, they were about 3 feet deep "riding" a scooter attached to a steel frame while rest of us are blowing water and sand on them to create illusion of movement. Their rigs were pumped up with O2 only.
Here is an article about it.

Thanks for posting the article. I like the shot of you & Jitka with all those "injuries". It must have been fun to be involved with a major shoot. Exhausting, but fun! I have one other question. The actors move very easily with their Megs. Were those megs loaded with scrubber and real scuba bottles? Or were they just shell, hoses and canister?

Thanks. Mr. X

p.s. I can relate with Ms. Almity. These Def TV's make every movies a new experience. My wife is coming around. She got to see Breakfast at Tiffany's and Shopgirl on the large screen. She doesn't think they are so bad anymore. Previous showings had been the Cave and Gladiator. Not exactly favorites with the gals.
:D

Actually the actors had "prop" units for most of the top-side shooting (you would not want to let them handle our life support equipment)
It was just thin plastic tube for the stack (empty) with a lid (no internal cell holder or batteries) and fake counterlungs with hoses. If you look carefully, you will notice that there is no HUD in the topside shots, and no ADV on the counterlungs. Even with that lightweight rig they were complaining that it was heavy :)

Thanks. The backstory is so interesting! Yes. I did notice that there wasn't a HUD on the surface kits, but didn't notice the lack of an ADV! We'll have to view again tonight. Actor complaints, those prima donnas. :D

I wonder how often an actor had a major hissy fit? :eyebrow: Espresso, or Valium please.
