Hello,

I have a question regarding my girlfriends condition after scuba diving.

First and foremost: My girlfriend has chronic fatigue syndrome which can be physically unpredictable at times.

The situation is as follows:

My girlfriend recently became certified as a PADI Open Water diver.

I've been certified for over a year.

We decided to take a trip to Tobermory and the Fathom Five National Marine Park.

It was a 4 day trip and we used 1 tank each day except the third day where we used 2. Our average dives were 40 ft deep.

On the third day we had booked ourselves on a charter and dove a few wrecks. Unfortunately my girlfriend is still sorting out her buoyancy and went all the way to the floor of the lake which was close to 90 feet down. I followed her down and tried to make sure, after that, that we stayed at a safe depth so that she wouldn't sustain an injury.

On our very last dive on the very last day she appeared, to me, very drowsy and sleepy looking underwater at only about 25-30 feet deep. I had us surface and performed the tired diver tow to take her into shore and make sure she was alright.

Ever since our scuba trip she's been feeling nauseous, dizzy, had blurred vision, headaches, a bad sense of balance, and very exhausted all the time.

We've been together awhile and I've never seen her this ill, and she believes her condition is related to the diving she did.

Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

Thank you for your time.

are you a DAN member?

Call them at 1-919-684-8111

Don't take any chances with what people on ScubaBoard have to say... call the experts.

Unfortunately no, we're not members of DAN just yet.

I'll look into joining them this evening for her sake.

call them anyway - they have dive doctors on staff to answer your questions.

howarde is right, don't wait do it now.

DAN medical is for members and non members. They seem to be more concerned with her health.

And we would like to know what they have to say. Nothing there is fitting any "classic" symptoms, at least not all together.
Best wishes, hope it's nothing bad.

Definitely call DAN - but I'm betting they're going to have her see an ENT. Sounds like a sinus/ear issue. All those symptoms could relate to a sinus pressure/inner ear imbalance.

The exhaustion could be from her CFS and the activity you did in general (and fighting off the other symptoms).

But absolutely, something this unusual after diving needs to be reviewed by dive docs.

You don't say how long ago the trip was.

These symptoms certainly aren't typical of DCS, but evaluation by a physician is probably in order.
