When do you start diving off OC Maryland. I know what the SST is, but what is the temp 30-60 ft down. Thanks Keith
Please excuse any dumb questions I"m a rookie!!!

Any idea what the OC, MD temp is in Aug (30 - 60 ft deep)?

If you're lucky - mid 60's - 70

Sorry, but there is nothing to dive in 30'-60'. Fenwick shoals is in Delaware with depths 15-25' but O.C doesn't have too much that I know of below 70'. At 70' you can dive the "Blenny", or "African Queen" or "P.F. Martin". For 30' or less, in August, usually a 3mm would be OK, but at 70' it would require no less than a one-piece 7mm with hood and gloves. Temps probably between 50 and 60 degrees.

I have to agree with CD... the Fenwick shoals is about the only thing in that depth range... and it isn't much to see... and deeper than 60 definately means 7mm.

The shoals are worth doing if you have an interest in spearfishing. While it's not the best spearfishing in the area... you can bag some nice flounder and sea bass usually.

Thanks for the replies/help. If I were to go out of Indian River Inlet, what would be a good place for a rookie to dive for some lobster? Thanks Keith

Fenwick Shoals has lobsters but they are small and rarely legal. That depth range is ok for
a rookie but the surge can be pretty bad sometimes. Small lobsters are ok to practice with
as long as you don't rip off their claws. Don't try to pull them out of the hole by the claws -
they will just pull off and the lobster will retreat into the hole. You can't keep the claws alone and you don't want to do that to a lobster that may be carrying eggs. Good luck and happy hunting.

Thanks CD, That was very helpful. Now I don't have to go through that learning curve at the lobsters expense. Keith

A better place to dive for lobsters out of Indian River Inlet would be the
"Manhattan". Depths are about 75-85 feet and it's broken up into a couple
large pieces. It's a nice dive and there are bigger bugs there. The BEST
dive for lobsters is "Pattys Pitcher" wreck which is an old wooden sailing vessel.
Lots there but deep 100' feet +.
