i recently switched from a vest bc to a back inflate at the suggestion of a friend. while my overall bouyancy is much better, while swimming forward i tend to push to the upright position. is this common or am i doing something wrong? Maybe it will just take some getting used to. AquaRock

Now it's time to work on trim.

Ideally your center of mass and center of buoyancy should be the same point. Sounds like your center of mass is aft of your center of buoyancy.

Shift the negative buoyancy in your rig up towards your head a little bit at a time.

Move your ballast toward your head.

Options:
Move the tank higher up on the backpack.
Put weights in the trim pockets of your BC.
Put an ankle weight around the tank valve.
Put a couple clip-on weights on your chest d-rings.
Put a weight on the top tank strap.
Put your weights in the back of your weight belt.

Also:
Make sure you are kicking toward the back(feet behind you).
Pay attention to how you hold your body.
Don't arch your back to look up; just bend your neck.

This is an ongoing process that will change with different wetsuits, in fresh or salt water, and different size tanks. Just keep playing with it and move toward the goal of being easily balanced in a horizontal position.

Have fun diving,
