May/June Diving

Hi all,
I am in the army and being assigned to Ft. Monmouth in May. I will have a few weeks in Jersey before I take an extended tour of Iraq and would like to get a dive or two in before I go. I would like to do some wreck dives (have to be shore dives or shallow boat dives since I am only OW cert.), but am open to just about anything.

The main question is, what are the water temps up there in May and early June? Also, what sites would you recommend for that time of year? Any other recommendations, such as dive shops with trips, etc would also be greatly appreciated.

You can dive here in May and June if you are OK with 50 degree temps. The best diving is usually in the fall when the water temps are in the high 50's to 60's. Dry suit diving is of course the norm up here for many of us. A farmer john 6-7 mil wet suit with hood and gloves is used by many.

The shore dives up her are an adventure but the boat diving on wrecks are quite nice. If you have the desire and want to do the deeper dives, just hook up with one of our members and do a attitude adjustment dive Dutch Springs and then maybe a boat dive the next day.

Since you are in NJ, The Scuba Connection located in NJ and makes their home at Dutch Springs almost every weekend. They have the gear, instructors and do organized boat dives.

I am sure someone on this thread will chime in with a URL for you concerning this dive shop.

As I am personally interested in diving with anyone, let me know when you are around and maybe we can work something out.

Shawn- If you're getting sent to the desert for god knows how long, we'll be glad to help you get some diving in before you go. Our group has experiece with a whole bunch of local sites, and by May we'll be in full swing. You shouldn't have any trouble finding something going on.

Usually at least some of us will be planning something every weekend. Keep us posted as to when you arrive, and we'll make sure you get in on the fun.

Also, Shawn, if you haven't heard much yet about Dutch Springs, which is pretty much our backard lake and is an ideal site for dive training and for recreational diving, check out:

Following up on what Bill said, The Scuba Connection is at Dutch virtually every weekend from when it opens in April til it closes in December. One way to get acclimated to Dutch Springs and advance your diving skills would be to do the Advanced Open Water program. TSC offers it at Dutch every other weekend. Typically the lineup is to do a wreck dive, navigation dive, and night dive on Saturday, and then a deep dive and a multi-level dive on Sunday. Getting your AOW certification would also enable you to dive the Jersey boats, as virtually all of those captains will want to see the AOW cert, as well as a redundant air supply, for dives below 80'. TSC also runs wreck charters on the Jersey boats most weekends during the season.

On the other hand, you could just come out and dive with us, or with any of the Wreck Valley divers (who I look forward to meeting more of this season).

North East Scuba Supply, is putting their boats boats back in the water off NJ in the next week or two. They run wreck dives almost every weekend. I'm signed up for a dive 3/21. Thanks for the welcome and the invites. Dutch Springs looks great. I'm originally from Minnesota, so cold water shouldn't bother me too much. Although this warm Florida water I've gotten used to may have made me soft. I'll be sure to let you all know when it looks like I will be getting into town.
