... but it works in an old Canon G2 and in my card reader. Any hints?

Thanks in advance!

jlyle:
Can you reformat the card in the 5050?

No. When I try, it says "Card Error"

jlyle:
Hummm.. what happens when you press the Ok button? Do you get the top menu?

No. I have to switch to my xD card to get any functionality back. The 5050 operates normally on the xD card. It also is happy with my old 256MB CF card, so I know I did not "blow up" the card slot.

This might be a firmware problem - there are some reported compatability issues with some CF cards that had to do with that. If it is the problem it is possible to update/upgrade your firmware. I'm not sure if Olympus allows you to do it yourself now so maybe the best would be to phone them and see what they say.

Good to know. Thanks. I sent in an email to Olympus, but I'll follow up with a phone call.

Last night I updated from V558-78 to V558-82 firmware. That is the latest I could find on the web. Still no joy.

This morning I talked to Olympus Tech support. They told me they only guarantee compatibility with Sandisk Ultra II and Lexar something or another. I was using a generic 1G PRETEC 80X CF Card. I returned the card to Fry's (no hassles - amazing) and bought the Sandisk. IT WORKS.

Moral of the story - "standard" media cards are not so standard.

By the way, for anyone who wants to upgrade the firmware in the 5050 to the latest version, the file and instructions can be found at:

Cheers
