the only limit is your own personal limit. i'm NAUI rec and i've gone to 120ish

as a matter of fact, there is no law saying yuo need a certification to go diving either, but nobody will rent you gear, or u'll never get on a boat so :)
 
Isn't that convenient for PADI, three different certifications to reach 130 feet. Talk about revenue enchancement. If it takes you that many classes to gain the knowledge and skills to do a dive to 130, you don't belong in a body of water deeper than four feet that isn't lined with concrete.

As already stated, it's your own personal limit.
