Strap some dead fish carcasses to your body so if the sharks appear you can bribe them to stay away. Seriously though.....you have more to worry about getting into the water than you do of sharks. Just go and enjoy yourself.

take a camera that will guarantee you won't see any sharks

Got to agree with this one, went to key largo (twice) , bring camera, see 1 sharks that gets away, go to West Palm Beach bring camera see no sharks, go to Grand Bahama Island (50 miles from Fla) forget camera, see sharks on every dive (6 dives)! min 1 max about 15 to 20 at one time.:jaws::sharkattack:

Oh and the the dive where we saw the one shark, evidently he was in a hurry to get to dinner, because he went by us like a bullet, didn't show in curiosity like the others.

... that doesn't always work ...

You don't need a speargun to be "safe" around sharks ... you need common sense. We're not on their menu, and once they determine that they can't eat you or mate with you, they're generally not interested. Don't do something stupid like trying to touch it, or making it feel threatened or entrapped and they won't bother you. If you see one, count your blessings ... many of us spend considerable effort and money hoping for that experience ...

One more thing that is one of the reasons why I have such concern over this issue was that last year (2011) in the Seychelles which is only 1000 Miles from Mauritius two men were killed by Sharks, the first was a french guy who was just swimming in the sea, the second was a britsh man on his honeymoon who was snorkeling just 18 metres off the beach when he was attacked by they believe to be the same shark. Experts say the shark responsible was a Great White Shark!!

My daughter spent a whole month in the Seychelles last June working on a reef research project, she only saw one shark over 30+ dives and it was a mere 6M long ...... small whale shark :D .....

I believe one of the Seychelles victims last year was feeding fish :dontknow:

I always thought that the reason sharks "spit people out" is not because they don't enjoy the taste.... but because that is how they hunt. They are ambush predators who try to minimize the risk of injury and the energy expended when attacking unkown prey. From what I have read, sharks perform an ambush attack that is intended to wound the prey severely, such that, it bleeds to death. Once the prey is dead or weakened enough to no longer put up a fight (that could injure the shark), the shark moves in and eats the prey.

So when you hear all the stories that sharks don't like the taste of people, what really happened, is the person was rescued or able to get to shore, before bleeding to death, and becoming shark food.

If you see one, count your blessings en enjoy it.

Remember... People are not shark prey. If that were the case there would simply be no case of shark-attack survivors. In fact sharks do not like the taste of people, that is why they spit them out asap, people call that an attack while in fact it is en error made by the shark. Big problem is that we humans are just not created to withstand the tasting methods of sharks.

If sharks were out to kill humans, they would do so with the greatest of easy and no survivors would exist for they are too good at what they do. Besides, I think you have more chance winning the lottery than getting attacked judging from the numbers of people that swim, snorkel, dive, surf compared to those that get "atacked". see Shark attack - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Compared to the 73 million sharks getting killed by humans every year, it it them that should fear us... :)

Have you ever seen a shark attack a seal?? they don't exactly swim around and wait on them to die! And usually the only evidence that they've been there is the sea gulls picking up the scraps! If you noticed from most reports even when the find the victim dead, they actually find the victim!!
