Does anyone know the specific type and availability of that heavy duty material used to make weight bags using bird shot?

Same material used on outdoor furniture. Most wholesale fabric houses carry that.

Welcome to the board.

I have also used the nylon flag material. It's not as porus as the other stuff but works very well, esp if your using smaller shot sizes. It's a bit easier to find and work with than the regular stuff.

The other neat tip posted on Scubaboard is that if you pick the right two sizes of birdshot, the smaller one fits in the spaces between the big ones, and the soft weights will be smaller for a given weight than the equivalent soft weight made out of just one size of shot.
