Am new to scuba diving and am slowly aquiring gear for myself. I recently bought a mask. problem is it fogs a lot. what do i do?

appreciate any help.

thanks

First thing I was told to do when I bought mine was to clean it with toothpaste. Apparently there is some coating that is put on them. You only need to do that once.
After that when you go into the water spit into the mask, and wipe it around with your fingers, then rince out with water. Do this just before you go in. I haven't had any problems with it so far.

the coating is a light layer of silicon, helps prevent scratching during maunfacturing and shipping.

any paste based toothpaste works well. rubbit around alot and then rinse it good. you may have to repeat. once that is done. and comercial anti-fog or spit should keep you fog free

Make sure to use regular toothpaste and not a gel. Something in the gel can scratch the lens. I find that after using anti fog solutions for a while a film builds up and I use toothpaste occasionally to clean the film off the lens.

just the opposite. paste style toolpaste has a mild abasive in it that helps to take the silicon off the lense it isn't harsh enough to scratch the lens, kind of like a polishing effect.

gels do not posses this quality so the gel just gets your mask lens minty fresh smelling.

Thanks for the correction RIDIVER!

Anti-fog:
Johnson's Baby Shampoo and H2-O mixed 1:1 and put in a small squirt of spray bottle. Put a smidgin on each lens, rub around with finger and gently rinse.

Look, Mom, no more tears !!!

I second that!! Just came back from a dive trip. Used the baby shampoo on one of the dives, and it was clear throughout the whole dive!! Commercial anti fog I bought still got the mask fogged.

Johnson's Baby Shampoo is the best!! Smells good too!!
