Even if this is urban legend it is way to funny. I can say from a similar experience from sinus surgery that this is no picnic to do without a mask on. With salt water, it doesn't make it any easier. Give this one to Myth Busters!!
 
Oddly enough, I was in Cozumel last week and someone I met there told me this same story. He claimed his friend had heard it directly from a BSAC course director, one of whose recent graduates was supposed to have been the instructor in question.
 
I think basically what we need here is a brave hearted, stone sinused person to give it a try and let us know. LOL but that won't be me!!!!
